Swedac's work as an executive agency involves accreditation of:
- laboratories performing analysis, testing or calibration
- certification bodies for certification of products, quality and environmental management systems, information security management systems, occupational health and safety management systems and persons
- environmental verifiers for EMAS (the EcoManagement and Audit Scheme)
- inspection bodies
All accreditation is performed against requirements normally set out in ISO standards.
As a national accreditation body, Swedac must also fulfil certain requirements. These are set out in ISO/IEC 17011. Compliance is confirmed by international assessments that are performed within the framework of the European accreditation cooperation (EA).
Swedacs executive activities also include determining the competence of bodies that are to be notified to the European Commission under the terms of certain directives, known as Notified Bodies, and the performance of project work such as assisting the establishment of accreditation bodies in other countries, the holding of lectures and so on.
There are multilateral agreements between the various national accreditation bodies for recognition of each other's accreditations. Swedac is the Swedish signatory to such agreements, which means that results from a body that has been accredited by Swedac are accepted in all countries that have signed the multilateral agreement
